The head of PDPS and the judges award cash prize and certificate to Mr. Calma and his coach Ms. Piedad.

The Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED) student from Northern Christian College Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, John Patrick T. Calma bagged home the 1st prize in the Regional Infographics Making Contest, Tertiary Level.

The contest was in line with the National Statistics Month (NSM) Celebration. The Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office 1 actively participated by hosting the said competition. This event’s lead agency, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), aims to expose students in the corporate world by promoting data and statistics for healthy Philippines through data visualization.

Mr. Calma was a former graphics artist in Journalism Club during high school. He incorporated the pattern of inabel fabric on the background of his design as a representation of being an Ilokano youth. His output gives a unique and harmonious vibe as described by the judges. Calma states that it was his first time making infographics and fortunately, he won at the Provincial level and eventually at the Regional level.

Mr. Calma conceptualizes very carefully before making his winning piece.

 

“My technique was to gather data and information needed first then proceed with the layout and design for the remaining time”, shares Calma. “I would like to reiterate the importance of data and statistics in our lives. As they say, statistics never lie. Therefore, as a member of the youth, we must take our part in spreading reliable data and statistics”, he adds as he encourages others to use one’s talent in serving the public through information.

“Nirekomenda siya ng mga kaklase niya dahil marami na siyang experience sa ganyan. Dati rin siyang nag-aral ng Interior Design bago siya nag BSED (He was recommended by his classmates because he has a lot of experience in that. He studied Interior Design course before he shifted to BSED)”, adds Ms. Annabell Ruth S. Piedad, Calma’s coach and adviser.

Calma was awarded a cash prize of Php 5,000 while the runners-up Robin Justin B. Catbagan of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Mid-La Union Campus; Paula Denise Concepcion of University of Northern Philippines, Ilocos Sur; and Edison E. Ramilo III of PHINMA-University of Pangasinan were also rewarded Php 1,000 each for their enthusiasm in expressing their creativity through Infographics Making.  (by: Anjhannel R.
