107 year-old Social Pensioner in Ilocos Norte receives ‘stipend’
In Piddig, Ilocos Norte, a 107 year-old senior citizen fondly called “Lola Ansor” recently received her stipend due for the last quarter of 2011 amounting to Php 1,500.00 (Php 500.00 monthly) from DSWD’s Social Pension Program.
Lola Ansor is among the oldest of the 10, 986 total social pensioners in the Ilocos Region who started receiving ‘stipend’ since January 2011. During the pay-out in Piddig, Ilocos Norte, ‘Lola Ansor’ was the oldest in the group. She was born on May 28, 1904.
To note, DSWD Field Office 1 has released about Php 65.9 million worth of stipend of social pensioners for year 2011. This stipend is only applicable to indigent senior citizens listed by the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction, the ill, frail and abandoned/neglected senior citizens.
She can barely walk and has a low vision. But Lola Ansor lives alone in her small abode made of scrap galvanized iron sheets.
Most of the time Lola ‘Ansor’ is assisted by her great granchildren in her daily chores. They also provide her food every mealtime.
Lola Ansor is still far from senility. She has clear thoughts, happy voice, and smiling face that makes her a real inspiration to the younger generation and program implementers of Social Pension.
According to Lola Ansor, the stipend is used to buy delicious food like fish, pork meat and vegetables. She still enjoys food; ‘pork adobo’ is one of her favorites. Also, she prays a lot for a longer life, “kaasiannak kad pay iti Apo ta ikkannak pay iti kired ken pigsa (may the Lord be gracious to me, sustain me and give me more strength).
107 year-old Lola Ansor is a living mark of significant political changes and socio-economic conditions of poor families which have not changed ordinary lives like hers over the years.
She vividly recalls events in her life since the time of Americans and Japanese colonizers who reached this town in the early 1900s and in 1940’s. She related how the whole community took refuge in the mountains whenever Japanese soldiers come and force them to wash their clothings full of stains and blood.
‘Naragsakak ken saanak a papatay patay,” (im happy and active person) she shared in the vernacular when asked about her secret in life. She was not educated and got married at the age of 16, bore no child but has lots of nieces and nephews and grandchildren even great grandchildren whom she took care in her younger days. Issues clarified, NGA services informed thru Convergence Caravan“Idi, haan kami nakapag Day Care ken haan mi pay makita ti ruangan ti RHU. Ita maited ti kasapulanen ti ubbing gappu ti Pantawid Pamilya”(Before, we did not have the opportunity to avail of Day Care Service and we did not even see the RHU doors. But now, children’s needs are being provided because of Pantawid Pamilya) says Agustina Abluyen at the recent Convergence Caravan held in Suyo, Ilocos Sur. This caravan seeks to inform beneficiaries on the Convergence Program along with offered programs and services of the National Government Agencies (NGAs). Also, it serves as a venue to clarify Pantawid Pamilya concerns. In her message, Convergence Regional Project Coordinator Virginia Sesay commended the LGU and NGA support for their partnership with the DSWD in providing necessary services for the Pantawid Pamilya claimholders. Moreover, she encouraged the beneficiaries to continue complying with the program‘s co responsibilities. One of the issues raised was the health package for high school students. According to Ilocos Cluster Provincial Link Aaron Garra, only those children enrolled in elementary will be given with the P500 health package. This is because deworming activities are only being conducted and given to elementary pupils and not to high school students.
